Sorry X, a new signee on SBG Records, has recently released her cover of "Bring Me To Life (ft. Woe, Is Me)". She adds her own touch to the track but keeps the original masterpiece intact. This first single since being signed has caught the attention of a number of media outlets and Spotify playlists, and is surely just the beginning for Sorry X. Read on for our exclusive interview with this artist on the rise!
Hi Alexa! Can you tell us about your journey with creating music? How did you get started, and what first ignited your passion?
I’ve always loved music and grew up playing bass guitar in rock/hardcore bands and writing poetry. I went to a Heart concert that inspired me to take music more seriously, and then my good friend introduced me to SoundCloud. It became an easy way for me to begin recording and releasing my own music which grew from there. Once I started getting positive feedback it made me push ever harder and now I have an awesome live band and a great team that I get to work with!
What made you choose Sorry X as an artist name, and how do you feel it represents you?
My artist name came to me because it matches my energy. I tend to be the first to apologize in situations. In a way, it’s a statement that I won't apologize for being myself. The X stands for my actual name Alexa, and it’s also a play on “Sorry Ex” because I write a lot of break up songs.
Who are some of your biggest musical influences, and how have they helped to shape your sound?
I have a ton of different musical influences. I really admire frontmen who put on a great live show like Freddie Mercury, Jacoby Shaddix, and Serj Tankian. Recently, I’ve been really inspired by the current metalcore scene like Bad Omens, Spiritbox, Sleep Token, as well as early 2000s nu metal like Evanescence, Limp Bizkit, and Korn! I also love the pop stars that have been crushing it recently like Chappell Roan and Charli XCX.
You’ve now collaborated with Woe, Is Me and Frank Zummo. What do you enjoy most about collaborating, and how do you approach working with other artists in the studio?
When it comes to collaborating, I really like to involve the people I collaborate with as much as possible and write with them in mind. It's a chance to build a real connection and I think duets can be extremely powerful. I’m grateful to have been able to collaborate with the artists I have and I’m looking forward to future collaborations!
How do you stay inspired and creative, especially when facing writer's block?
I try to not put too much pressure on myself. I try to just lean into the emotions I’m experiencing or just have fun which usually ends up creating my best work. The key for me to get out of a writer’s block is to stay active, take care of myself, listen to lots of music that inspires me, and create new experiences for myself like going on trips, hanging out with friends, or taking walks in nature. I push myself to continue creating consistently even if I don’t feel particularly in the mood.
Is there any particular reason that you chose to recreate “Bring Me To Life”?
Some of my earliest memories involve listening to the Fallen album and I’m often told I look like a young Amy Lee. My manager brought up the idea of covering "Bring Me To Life" when we first started working together and I considered it, but then we got super busy. 6 months later my label also randomly brought up the idea and we felt like it had to be a sign. My producer, Shea Moore, and I decided to do a modern take on the song and make it heavier and lower, but still pay tribute to the iconic original. Woe, Is Me lended some amazing vocals that really made the cover feel complete.
Do you have any plans to cover any other songs?
I would definitely love to, I have a few in mind and I’ve been doing mini covers on my TikTok and Instagram, but right now I’m shifting my focus to finishing a bunch of original music that I’ve been working on for a long time and am incredibly excited to release.
What did your Spotify Wrapped look like this year? Are there any rising artists you can recommend that we may not have heard of?
My wrapped was a little all over the place this year. I listened to a lot of The Plot In You, Sinizter, Crosses, and SZA. I’ll also shout out Fever 333 who I recently discovered!
Lastly, is there anything else you’d like to share with your fans?
I’m very excited to soon begin sharing a lot of the experiences I’ve been through and songs I’ve been working on for a long time. Thank you for all of the support <3
