Thanksgiving is a day celebrated by many Americans as a time of happiness and cheer. It also encourages us to reflect on instances from the past as we pass the various side dishes to our family members. Here are some songs to get you feeling thankful that you can add to your holiday music rotation!

  1. “We Are Family” - Sister Sledge

Everyone knows this celebratory anthem about unity, love, and the strength of family and strongly forged bonds. Making it a popular choice amongst parties and large gatherings.

  1. “Ode To My Family” - The Cranberries

This is a heartfelt song that reflects on lead singer Dolores O'Riordan's (RIP) childhood and the simple, yet profound, love and support she received from her family. It captures a sense of nostalgia and gratitude, emphasizing the importance of family and roots.

  1. “Macy’s Day Parade” - Green Day

Not exactly about Thanksgiving, per se, but the message in the chorus that purchasing things won’t bring you happiness feels pretty relevant. Especially given that Black Friday is right after, I think this serves as a small reminder of sorts.

  1. “Thanksgiving Theme (from Charlie Brown)” - Vince Guaraldi Trio

A song of no spoken words but so many words felt at the same time. Anyone who grew up watching the Charlie Brown shorts every holiday season knows this is an absolute must for bringing everyone together.

  1. “Lean On Me” - Bill Withers

Bill Withers reminds us that sometimes you just need a friend to lean on to help you get through tough times. Don't forget to thank yours this Thanksgiving.

  1. “Mama, I’m Coming Home” - Ozzy Osbourne

I believe this classic shines light on what people closer to my age tend to struggle with— finding their way in life. When life knocks you down, sometimes you need to come home to be reminded of the pleasures it has to offer through time spent with your community.

  1. “What A Wonderful World” - Louis Armstrong

In a time where this has felt like the longest year in the existence of years, Louis Armstrong helps remind us of the simple things in life. His lyrics highlight the wonders of the natural world—such as the sky, trees, and the colors of a rainbow—as well as the warmth of human connection and kindness.

  1. “Thanksgiving Prayer” - Joanne Cash

Many communities come together for Thanksgiving to strengthen their spiritual bonds during this time of reflection. The origin of this Cash spoken-word piece, of which eventually makes way into song, is a bit dark, but the message of Thanksgiving is abundantly clear.

  1. “Thank You For The Music” - ABBA

As a music photographer, everything about this song felt fitting to include. Without music in the world to inspire, many photographers, journalists, and musicians would not be where they are today.

  1. “The Thanksgiving Song” - Ben Rector

When I first heard this song, it truly did make me tear up, as I can relate to it heavily being away from my family most of the year. With lyrics about filling your plate with Thanksgiving staples and watching football, the one is for sure going to give you the feels.
