Coin (often stylized as COIN) is unabashedly themself on their new single "Slack". “Slack” is the third single from Coin’s highly anticipated album, I'm Not Afraid Of Music Anymore, set to release on September 13th. Preceded by “Take It Or Leave It” and “Strawberry Jam”, the three songs shed a light on what fans can expect from their album. It sounds like an introspective album backed by the bright and energetic sound Coin is known for. One where the band can shine a lot on their inner thoughts without holding back and caring about societal norms.

“Slack” is a quintessential Coin song. One may argue it’s the most Coin sounding song they’ve released in a while. They continue to share their vulnerable selves with the world and incorporate sounds from their previous albums. In particular, this song appears to replicate sounds heard on their third album, Dreamland. If that album was a favorite of yours, I’d recommend giving “Slack” a listen.

The band describes “Slack” as a “love letter to our band, tying the journey together with a loose knot. Coin has been stretched in every direction, but we embrace every shape and size, even the ones that no longer fit right into place”. It certainly does tie their journey in a loose knot as “Slack” is riddled with callouts to their previous songs in their lyrics specifically mentioning “Talk Too Much” and “Crash My Car”. It shows their growth from where they started as a band to where they are right now.

Along with direct song titles, there’s mention of crooked teeth and blood in their mouths which are two common tropes interwoven throughout their career and is heard on songs like “Malibu 1992”, “Lately II”, “Fingers Crossed”, “Are We Alone”, and one of their recent releases, “Take It Or Leave It”.

If the callouts in the lyrics aren’t enough to prove that this song is tying together their journey, the music video released for “Slack” incorporates elements from all of their previously released music. The video takes place in a white room set to look like the cover art from their first album COIN and there are various props like a massive ladybug, gravestones, a rainbow, and an orange insignia from Uncanny Valley, How Will You Know If You Never Try, Rainbow Mixtape, and Dreamland respectively. Everything is getting blown around and knocked over indicating the start of something new.

What’s so brilliant about releasing a track that has all these other tie-ins to their old music is for the old fans it’s fun to reminisce and find all the clues, but for the new fans, it encourages them to get in on the action and start listening to the rest of the discography. Old and new fans alike have more music coming their way proving there’s no better time to be a Coin fan.

Coin recently announced their upcoming tour. The I’m Not Afraid of Tour Anymore tour begins on September 29th. Tickets can be found here.
