Fans were wrapped around the block outside The Fillmore last Friday night, overflowing with energy in anticipation of seeing Denzel Curry for the first time in Charlotte, NC since 2018. Last time he performed right next door at The Fillmore’s more intimate venue dubbed The Underground. Since the TA13OO tour, Denzel Curry‘s Spotify monthly listeners have tripled from 2.2 Million to over 6.7 Million as of today and it definitely translated to the size of the crowd this evening.
PlayThatBoiZay was the first artist on the bill tonight. Born and raised in Carol City, Florida, he is an up-and-coming artist who varies from smooth melodies to distorted 808s. He had a fantastic sense of crowd control and he demonstrated it greatly, keeping fans engaged the whole time. I’m not sure how much of the crowd was familiar with him before tonight, but I bet they won’t forget him now. I enjoyed the pacing of his set and how he eased the fans into his heavier tracks. You can find him on Instagram here.
redveil is a rapper, songwriter, and producer from Prince George’s County, Maryland. He produces most of his own songs, occasionally also making beats for other artists. At the age of only eighteen years old, he is already well on his way to making a name for himself with his Spotify showing over 1.5 Million monthly listeners and now a tour with Denzel Curry. He managed to put on a unique set while still winning the crowd over. You can find redveil on Instagram here. You can find his most popular track, “Weight”, here.
AG Club is self-described as “A genre-less music group that consists of Baby Boy & Jody Fontaine.” Between their solo melodic tracks like “Hngover” and their heavy-hitting rap tracks such as “Memphis, Pt 2” that has top rappers like NLE Choppa & ASAP Ferg featured it’s clear AG Club is here to stay. Starting out in the Bay Area they dropped their debut album Halfway Off the Porch in 2020 and since then have racked up over 60 million streams on Spotify alone. You can find them on Instagram here.
Denzel Curry used to be known for his aggressive, fast-paced vocals but with the release of “Melt My Eyez See Your Future” you can now find lyrics about the truths of himself and the world and a lot less focus on his persona. With a change like this usually, you would expect the artist’s fan base to mellow out as well, but that was not the case in Charlotte, NC. From the moment the first act came on stage to the moment Denzel Curry got off of it, the fans were absolutely ecstatic and buzzing around in the pits. Although the pacing of the setlist may have differed from what OG fans expected, that didn’t stop them from jumping around and rocking the barricade. He started the night off with his newer tracks like “Melt Session #1” and “Walkin” before turning up the pace and transitioning to his older songs like “Ricky”, “CLOUT COBAIN | CLOUT CO13A1N” and “Ultimate”. This was the best I’ve ever seen Denzel perform live and he looked truly happy to be up on stage. It’s always a good experience to go to a concert where the artist loves what they do. You can find his latest album here and his Instagram here.
