There is nothing like a little hometown love, and Easy Honey and Brave Baby made sure Charleston fans felt their appreciation big time! Saturday night’s sold-out show on Isle of Palms was a full-circle moment for the indie surf rock band, Easy Honey. These guys have immersed themselves in the Lowcountry since graduating college, making the beach their home.
The opening band, Brave Baby, is a moody, folky, psychedelic rock band that got their start in Chucktown back in 2011 when their drummer, sound engineer, and producer, Wolfgang Zimmerman (known for his work with Band of Horses, SUSTO, and She Returns From War) collaborated with Keon Masters (vocals, guitar), Christian Chidester (guitar), Jordan Hicks (bass), and Steven Walker (keyboard) to create a groovy sound like no other. After a hiatus, some solo projects, and big life events, the group is back together and wooing us again with their most played track: “Soothsayer”. They even covered some Chappell Roan, which sent the audience into overdrive!
The crowd was buzzing with excitement as two “beekeepers” took the stage to spray the gorgeous flowers that decorated Easy Honey’s set. I, for one, did not expect to see pollination and honey farming taking place at the Windjammer: a beach-front live music venue that has hosted some of the greatest musicians for over 50 years. There are also very few venues out there that allow you to kick off your shoes at the door! These events made for a memorable night before the first note was even played.
Now, before my fellow apiarists panic, no real bees were harmed during this concert—in fact, this band is heavily involved in protecting and conserving the environment. They had an awesome beach cleanup over the weekend and are expanding their environmental component throughout their tour by organizing more events with local organizations to preserve our Earth’s natural habitats. A rock band who loves our planet? SWOOOOON.
Easy Honey will tour throughout the fall to promote their newest album, Cupidity Unlimited. With 30+ more shows across the country, you will want to check this talented group out if you are a fan of The Kinks, The Killers, and The Replacements! For those Sewanee alumni out there, Darby McGlone (vocals, guitar), Selby Austin (vocals, guitar), Charlie Holt (drums, vocals, and Webster Austin (bass, vocals) bring back that mountainy, small-town, college feel with “anything but you”.
