Indie pop/rock duo EQUAL consists of Canadian sisters, Chelsea and Saleen Nolan. The duo recently released their single, "Stupid," as a preview of their upcoming sophomore EP, Parallel, set to release in February.

According to a Facebook post that the duo shared, this single has a strong focus on their roots, while exploring the comparisons between their musical journey with those of other artists.

EQUAL's new single, "Stupid," out now.

The single has a very simplistic tone to it that feels extremely personal, like a diary entry set to music. There is also a sense that the artist is simply thinking out loud to themselves, rather than intending to share it with an audience. This idea of the artist sharing their raw thoughts is reiterated through the lyrics, "I can show you my mind// let it go."

Overall, the song puts the listener into a sort of calm, dreamlike state that further adds to the personal touch. In the beginning, the song transitions from one sister singing, to the next, before the two voices come together. The instrumentals are also rather simple for this song, creating a gentle balance with the vocals. There is a brief, instrumental fade in at the beginning that matches well with the fade out at the end of the track.

The themes of self-doubt, comparisons of individual journeys, and pride in your work and roots ring true throughout the entire song. EQUAL seems to be exploring the hardships of their musical journey, while also figuring out how to appreciate and stay true to themselves. This back-and-forth of several thoughts is created through lyrics like "I know it's stupid but// I can't let go// of these thoughts// hating that it hits so// close to home."

This track is the best single to get fans excited for the upcoming release of EQUAL's sophomore EP, Parallel, in February.
