Flatland Cavalry brought some Texas twang to the Lowcountry on Thursday night! A sold-out show boasted a crowd of 2,000, and the weather couldn’t have been better at the outdoor venue. The Refinery is Charleston’s newest mixed-use facility and is a local favorite, offering local vendors, great food trucks, and the prettiest Palmetto views!

Flatland Cavalry, featuring Cleto Cordero (vocals), Reid Dillon (guitar), Jonathan Saenz (bass), Jason Albers (drums), Wesley Hall (fiddle), and Adam Gallegos (utility instruments), formed around 2014 in Lubbock, Texas. They played songs from each of their albums and EPs, and fans sang along to every word! A crowd favorite was definitely their cover of “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac.

The band has had some major success in the past couple of years with “Mountain Song” being featured in Yellowstone and “Touchdown” on the Twisters soundtrack alongside musical superstars Red Clay Strays, Luke Combs, Miranda Lambert, Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson, Tyler Childers, Leon Bridges, Thomas Rhett, Megan Mooney, and Shania Twain (to name a few)!

The band’s supporting act, Briscoe, kicked off the evening with some Americana folk-rock! Truett Heintzelman and Philip Lupton met at summer camp as youngsters and reunited in college to start one of the best bands out of Austin, Texas in recent years. Both bands can be described as “Red Dirt”, encompassing rock, folk, country, bluegrass, honey tonk, and Western swing. The crowd was just as diverse- all ages, ethnicities, and styles were apparent as I mingled with the audience during the show.

My favorite cover of the night was Briscoe’s version of “Never Been to Spain,” where they changed the lyrics to shoutout South Carolina. I was able to catch up with Philip Lupton after their set and he was kind enough to chat about the show and share their set list with me.

Briscoe's Setlist // She Burns Away / High On You / The Well / Coyotes / Folsom Prison Blues (Johnny Cash cover) / Tell Me / Sparrows / Dirty Shoes / When the Desert / Never been to Spain (Elvis cover) / Hooped Earrings / Hill Country Baby

If you’re a fan of the Turnpike Troubadours, Randy Rogers, the Avett Brothers, Neil Young, James Taylor, Paul Simon, and John Mayer, you’ll love both of these bands!
