About a year and a half ago, I was asked to cover a show at a taco shop up in Denton, TX. Why not? There were several amazing bands on that bill but one of those bands took my interest, threw it in the pit, and I've been captivated ever since. This is the same band that had such an intense pit that my camera got kicked out of my hand. That band was Heavy//Hitter and, my god, what a fucking band.
Heavy//Hitter have taken the music scene by storm since 2019 as the band inches ever closer to one hundred thousand monthly listeners on Spotify. With such songs as “Wall of Wax,” & “Paved in Blood,” the band makes in-your-face, OG deathcore music. The band is gearing up to release their new EP, Moments of Misery, on November 8th via Blue Grape Music.
When speaking about one of the tracks on the new EP, "No Mercy, No Remorse", vocalist Austin Hayes comments:
It's a revenge song about getting back at someone who stabbed you in the back. You have no mercy or remorse in the end. You're willing to take everything that’s been taken from you.
"No Mercy, No Remorse" and "Waste of Life" are sitting pretty at the top of my list of "best releases" of the year. These two songs sound exactly like the songs I heard for the first time back in the early 2000's that got me into the deathcore genre and heavy music scene. Plus, these lyrics hit you right in the gut as they are accompanied by the crunchiest riffs and bone-shaking drum fills you've ever heard. "My only sin, was I'm the only one / Who could see / Through you now" has been repeated over and over again in my mind. This band just doesn't hit. "I can't stand, the way you speak / It's like a gun to my head" has me feeling like I'm an angsty teen again going through a bad break-up. The only problem I have with Heavy//Hitter is that they aren't bigger. This is the type of a band that could easily sell out a 1,500 cap room with ease.
If these two recent releases are any indication as to how their new EP will sound, I am waiting impatiently for the release to finally happen.
