Halloween came early this year as Ice Nine Kills brought their Kiss of Death Part II tour to DFW on Wednesday evening. Accompanied, once again, by co-headliners In This Moment, along with Avatar and TX2, the night was a nonstop, spooky joyride that every fan present is sure to remember.
Just as INK would take fans on a ride through Horrorwood, Avatar took us on a trip to their self-proclaimed “freak show,” and I gotta say, it was one of the wildest sets I have ever seen. These Swedish rock stars definitely knew how to captivate an audience. With synchronized windmills, cheeky banter with the crowd, and the overall dark, carnival aesthetic, Avatar has certainly become a band that I will never forget. After opening their set with their explosive song “Dance Devil Dance,” the band continued to play banger after banger, and by the time they had played their final song, I was already looking up when they would be playing Dallas again.
Next up on the bill was the very anticipated In This Moment. When the first few notes to “The Purge” began to play, the crowd screamed so loudly, and so long, that it was honestly a bit difficult to hear the song coming through the speakers. The production value and detail that was put into the show was nothing short of incredible. With the striking visuals, mesmerizing dance choreography, and the sheer power behind Maria’s vocals, it makes seeing In This Moment live feel almost like a religious experience. If you haven’t seen this band perform before, you are truly missing out.
After three great performances for the opening bands, the time had finally come. Ice Nine Kills took the stage with gory enthusiasm as they opened with the Resident Evil-inspired song, “Rainy Day.” Fans were cheering, zombies were sprinting across the stage, and I was battling the urge to set my camera down and just admire the chaos in front of me. Keeping the momentum going, the band soared through several more of their most iconic songs, such as “Meat & Great” and fan favorite “The Shower Scene.” To finish out the exciting night, the band closed with “Welcome to Horrorwood,” which left the crowd absolutely raving as lead singer, Spencer Charnas, climbed out over the crowd on the final chorus before crowd surfing back to the stage.
Ice Nine Kills is truly one of the best live bands I have ever seen. With each song being inspired by a specific horror film, INK always make sure to go all out with the onstage theatrics. Bringing up everything from infamous horror villains, such as a masked Hannibal Lector and Jason, to the iconic Marion Crane from Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. Whether you are a horror fan or not, the spectacle of an Ice Nine Kills show and the pure adrenaline rush you get from the music will definitely have you coming back for more. Kiss of Death Part III tour, anyone?
