Indie rock band Mother Mother put on quite the show at The Fillmore in Minneapolis, MN, on Tuesday night. The Canadian band formed in 2005 with quite the resurgence thanks to social media in the last three years. The release of their ninth album, Grief Chapter, in February of this year, led to their current worldwide tour.
Right off the bat, I could tell it would be an exciting performance with the crowd's energy and on-theme outfits. Two of the band's singers and keyboardists, Molly Guldemond and Jasmin Parkin, started the show waltzing to the very front of the stage hitting ethereal, crowd-silencing notes. That was until they finished the intro and the crowd was anything but silent! It was a show-stopping intro that was a seamless transition to lead singer Ryan Guldemond taking the stage and opening with "Nobody Escapes", the flavorful intro to their newest album.
Before Mother Mother took the stage, an alternative indie band from Los Angeles, Winnetka Bowling League got the crowd warmed up with their Tame Impala and Glass Animals-style music. Lead singer Matthew Koma and the band even covered the coveted Chappell Roan's "Casual." Their set included a medley of upbeat and relaxed tunes creating the perfect foundation for the night's vibe.
The entirety of Mother Mother's performance flowed beautifully from song transitions to speaking to the crowd, and everything in between. Their music not only kept you on your toes, but the emotion from all three singers, drummer Ali Siadat, and bassist Mike Young was incredibly captivating to watch.
While still in the first half of their set, Mother Mother shocked the crowd with their unique cover of "Video Games" by the iconic Lana Del Ray. This cover suited the band exceptionally and was a great creative choice to perform sprinkled into their set. The band then played their classic rock hit "Explode!" to continue into the second half of their set. From here on out you could feel the buildup to their most well-known songs including "Hayloft" and "Verbatim" which went viral on social media in recent years.
Mother Mother saved the prized "Grief Chapter" and "Burning Pile" to be their encore songs. Ending the show with a single from their most recent album and one from their 2008 album, O My Heart, was a great way to tie the show up with a full-circle moment for the band and the fans.
