Songs And Storytime With Emery

Tucked within Birmingham’s city limits, the Woodlawn Theatre has undergone a stunning transformation by blending its rich history with fresh creative energy. Initially opened in 1929 as the Woodlawn Family Theatre, the venue served the community as a beloved cinema until its closure in 1957. In the following decades, it took on various roles—from church to medical facility—before catching the attention of Will Mason, CEO of Mason Music and the Mason Music Foundation. Recognizing its potential, Mason purchased the building in 2020 and launched an ambitious renovation project. Despite pandemic-related delays, the revitalized theater officially reopened in May 2023 as a 250-seat venue for live music, private events, and community gatherings — the perfect backdrop for the Songs and Stories Acoustic tour stop featuring Emery, and special guests Flake.

The evening started with a surprising yet delightful opening set from Flake, a trio joining the stage from Wichita, KS. Armed with two acoustic guitars and a cajón (pronounced ka-hone), the band describes their sound as alt-rock with “emo sprinkles.” Flake brought an infectious energy to the stage, immediately engaging the crowd. Frontman Blake Loggan proved a natural performer — charismatic, sharp-witted, and genuinely connected with the audience. One standout moment was his humorous exchange with fans about Kansas versus Alabama, which had the crowd laughing.

While Flake’s lyrics lean into melancholy themes, the band delivers them through upbeat rhythms and catchy melodies that cleverly mask the emotional weight — unless you’re paying attention. Songs like “On Again,” “Nothing To Do,” and “Lust” stood out, showcasing the trio’s ability to bring both energy and introspection to the stage. Flake owned the room, and I’ll be first in line for their next show!

Once Emery took the stage, the room was buzzing with anticipation. Greeted with the excitement only longtime fans can deliver, the band launched into a stripped-down version of their hit, “Can’t Stop the Killer.” Known for their in-your-face loud live shows, Emery traded high-volume theatrics for something more vulnerable and immersive. Acoustic guitars, a softened bassline, and carefully layered percussion allowed their musicianship and lyrical depth to take center stage in a new light. This was especially delightful to the fans in the back as they danced their hearts out.

Throughout the evening, Emery proved how naturally they could shift into an acoustic format. Vocalist Toby Morrell’s delivery, typically commanding and intense, became raw and intimate, exposing new emotional layers in every song. Familiar tracks, once filled with electric energy, took on a softer tone without losing their impact. Their performance of “Left With Alibis and Lying Eyes,” formerly a full-throttle anthem, was transformed into a moving ballad — arguably even more impactful in this subdued form.

Between songs, Emery offered behind-the-scenes anecdotes and reflections that deepened the audience’s connection to the music. Guitarist Devon Shelton shared a funny story about a fan who once asked if “Can’t Stop the Killer” was based on true events (spoiler: it’s fictional) and gave a heartfelt explanation of the meaning behind “Streets of Gold.” These moments added warmth and relatability, turning the show into more of a communal hangout than a traditional concert, complete with laughter, wine, and tons of nostalgia.

As the night closed out (and everyone's bar tabs), Emery delivered a hauntingly beautiful performance of “Walls,” a fitting bit that showcased the band’s ability to reinvent their songs while remaining emotionally true to them. This wasn’t just a concert — it was a shared experience. Emery reminded us that powerful music doesn’t require volume to leave a lasting impression. Whether electric or acoustic, their songs resonate deeply, and this evening at the Woodlawn Theatre was proof of that.
