When I met my ex-husband in 2005, he wasn't impressed with my music taste, which was mostly pop-punk at the time. He ended up making me a mix CD of hard rock bands to educate me on what I was missing. On that mix was "Ugly", my introduction to one of the bands that ruled the early 2000s music scene, The Exies.

The Exies, short for "The Existentialists", were formed in 1997 in Los Angeles, CA. They have released four studio albums since and were hugely influential in the early days of nu-metal and post-grunge. On June 28th, they released their first EP in seventeen years, titled Closure.

I recently had the honor of chatting with Scott Stevens, lead vocalist, who shared his top ten favorite lyrics that he's written. Without further ado, I present our latest Top Ten with MSM...

  1. "Spirits High"

“How do I tell my friends I feel better when I’m by myself?“

  1. "Ugly"

“Look closer are you like me, are you ugly?“

  1. "Stray"

“swore to never ever leave you, to never let you out of my hands.“

  1. "Sad"

“Dreaming of a future that I’ll never have , the days are getting brighter but I’m just so sick of being sad.“

  1. "For What It's Worth"

“For what it’s worth, I had to fail to break through.“

  1. "How Did You Love"

“You can have a thousand voices calling your name.“

  1. "Miss the Misery"

“I don’t miss you, I miss the misery.“

  1. "Back from the Dead"

“I’m back from the dead, hell couldn’t hold me down!“

  1. "This is the Time"

“We always start with good intentions but lose ourselves along the way.“

10. "Blood Feather"

“In the name of love, I’ll follow you.“
