Californian rock band Third Eye Blind recently came through Dallas, Texas on August 1st on their Summer Gods Tour. The band headlined and was accompanied by Yellowcard and A R I Z O N A.
New Jersey pop rock band A R I Z O N A started the evening off on a rather upbeat and more pop-rock note. As people filed into the venue, there was plenty of dancing and moving during A R I Z O N A's set. After I started to pay attention to the lyrics, there seemed to be a bit of contrast between the music itself and the lyrics, as they seemed to come from a place of hurt and maybe even heartbreak. Nevertheless, their set was a great start to the evening.
Next up: Floridian rock band, Yellowcard. This set is one I was personally excited for, and they did not disappoint. The entire crowd immediately perked up upon Ryan Key's entrance to the stage, and the group immediately set things in motion with "Lights and Sounds." Yellowcard's opening of their set was full of nostalgia and carried on as they went right on into "Cut Me, Mick" and "Only One." The crowd was on their feet and moving by the end of their set, which ended with, you guessed it, "Ocean Avenue."
Setlist: Lights and Sounds / Cut Me, Mick / Only One / Southern Air / Transmission Home / One Bedroom / Lift a Sail / Childhood Eyes / Keeper / Be The Young / The Hurt Is Gone / Ocean Avenue
After plenty of anticipation, Californian natives Third Eye Blind finally took the stage, but not all at once. The band started their set with a rather somber introduction entrance as Colin Creev entered the stage alone and started with "Motorcycle Drive By." Even with the somber start, energies were high as the band went on to play "Dust Storm" and their rendition of "Just Like Heaven," originally by The Cure. Third Eye Blind went back and forth and sprinkled in acoustic songs every now and then, but this didn't stop the crowd from going wild and singing every word. Much like Yellowcard's set, Third Eye Blind brought feelings of high school nostalgia and feelings of what I imagine it would've felt like to be on a beach in Los Angeles in the mid-late nineties.
About twelve songs in, the band changed format a bit and they all sat to give us a strictly acoustic rendition of the next few songs, "The Background," "Bonfire," "Blinded," "Jumper," and "Semi-Charmed Life." Just when the crowd thought that was it, for the evening, Third Eye Blind re-emerged for an encore of "How's It Going To Be," and it was magical.
