One of the reasons music has always felt like a close friend to me is being able to connect with artists through their songs– those moments where I hear a song and relate to it so much I can feel the emotions running through my entire body. Even if I don't relate to a song all the way, I can still feel the impactful vibrations through the artist's tone and lyrics. After hearing YOUTHYEAR's latest EP, Talking To A Ghost, it's safe to say this is just the beginning of Eric's beautiful path in the music scene.
Making his mark in the alternative/indie world with the release of his EP on January 24, the gratitude from fans' reactions has been the most rewarding part of his recent music drop. Songs included on the EP are "Talking To A Ghost," "21 Ways My Life Is Great," "Basement," and "While It Lasted." The first thought I felt after listening to each song was how much the music took me to a calming place, with delicate yet atmospheric melodies and introspective lyrics blending everything together so well.
Beginning with the impactful, resonant self-titled track "Talking To A Ghost," the song carries you through many different blends of melodies, starting with celestial guitar layering and evocative storytelling. Hearing this song does well with engaging the listener to feel both moved and create a memorable connection, breathing emotion through the instruments and words. The lyrics are honest, raw, real, and beautifully written from the heart. The passion put into this song deserves 5 stars, in my opinion.
The next track on the EP, "21 Ways My Life Is Great," bursts with an energetic, life-affirming melody that honestly can put anyone in a good mood. Another song that people can resonate with, the lyrics are nothing but creative and real. The song also delivers an almost celebratory message that combines both radiance and gratitude with each day.
The third track, "Basement," serves as a meaningful snapshot of past experiences and reflections on life. The song's stripped-back instrumentation and courageous vocal style deliver a unique, touching story that fans can receive with each listen. Combining alternative rock with an added punk edge, "Basement" captures a strong image of a long journey toward self-realization and working through life's lows– a song that helps listeners find their own strength in life.
The final track, "While It Lasted," which first released in mid-2024, offers an honest message on personal growth and the bittersweet nature of life's experiences. The lyrics convey gratitude for those moments life has to offer while leaving a lasting impact when hearing each word spoken. As far as the instrumentation goes, the track follows a softer tone throughout and allows the focus to stay on the lyrics. This creates a moving listening experience and a subtle way to finish the EP.
YOUTHYEAR's debut EP marks the start of his music journey and does well with showcasing his true growth as an artist. As he continues to evolve musically, keep an eye out for more and don't forget to give him a listen.
